Transparency at 33 Carat

Transparency is understanding the entire story behind every piece of jewellery, from the origin of the metals and gemstones to the design and production of the piece itself. At 33 Carat, we think it is important that you can wear jewellery with pride because it is beautiful and rooted in integrity, fairness and responsibility.

Beyond Conflict Free Diamonds

When diamonds are advertised as “conflict-free”, it implies to consumers that there is no funding of wars against nations. Using this narrow definition means, violence, human rights violations, environmental disaster, and labour exploitation can occur and still be a refinement of “conflict-free”.
That is why we started Beyond Conflict Free, which far exceeds the requirements of the Kimberley Process. We only source our diamonds from operations and countries that provide the highest labour, trade, and environmental standards. We supply all sellers with a strict chain of custody process so all diamonds can be traced back to their origin.
This means that less than 1% of the world’s diamonds can be classified as “beyond conflict free.” But we would rather take the more considerable effort to help people’s lives and the planet instead of “settling” for less.

Ethically sourced diamonds

We source all-natural diamonds exclusively from countries and mines considered low or moderate risk as per the Gemstones and Jewellery Community Platform Index. These countries include Botswana, Namibia, and Canada, locations with stronger environmental and social responsibility.
To remain accountable, we regularly audit our suppliers and monitor their practices. Every natural diamond we sell is proud to meet our Beyond Conflict Free promise.

Beyond the "conflict free" definition

The Future of Lab-Grown Diamonds

With the acceptance of lab grown diamonds, we are creating a new version of the jewellery business. The lab grown diamonds we will have are just as brilliant as the mined diamonds, but we will have a digital record that goes with the diamond documenting where it came from and how it got to you – in an accessible and transparent way.
Since 2019, we have been an early adopter of lab grown diamonds, and our target is to have 20% of our diamonds lab verified by the end of 2025. By utilising the reliability of blockchain technology in crypto, we are facilitating transparency in the diamond supply chain and giving you total confidence in your diamond’s provenance.

Empowering Communities through Gemstones

Our ethical sourcing goes beyond diamonds. We carefully choose gemstones that support fair trade markets, safer working conditions, and women in mining communities. We work to empower local communities by sourcing from suppliers who work to protect land, source safely, and empower communities. This, in turn, allows us to help move the jewellery supply chain forward into a place where it becomes a force for good.

Conflict Free & Ethical Diamond FAQs

What is a conflict free diamond?

The Kimberley Process defines diamonds as “conflict-free” when they do not fund wars against legitimate governments.

Are conflict free diamonds real?

Yes, conflict-free diamonds are natural diamonds that do not fund wars against legitimate governments.

What is an ethically sourced diamond?

Our Beyond Conflict Free standard defines what we consider ethical sourcing for natural diamonds: Surpassing Kimberley Process standards, our natural diamonds come from mine operations or countries that demonstrate a commitment to labour, trade, and environmental standards. An ethically sourced diamond meets high environmental standards for mining, supports social and economic development, and never contributes to violence, conflict, child labour, or forced labour.
